3 Types of Portable Solar-Powered Camping Stoves and Its Advantages
wood camp stoves

Article by Patricia Strasser

The presence of portable solar-powered camping stoves during outdoor activities has proven to be beneficial due to the following reasons: portability, convenience, economical, environment-friendly, and safe.

Solar energy is electricity generated from sunlight. It has various applications such as in agriculture, lighting, vehicles, and more. The invention of solar camping stoves has brought about myriad of advantages. Below are some types of the solar stoves namely:

Sport solar oven

Practicality makes this solar cooker advantageous as compared to others. The outer casing, which is an insulating plastic, is made of lightweight and resilient materials. It is versatile because it can be used for roasting, baking, cooking any type of food. Made from fiber glass, its insulation material keeps moisture away while cooking. Although insulation is good, it allows sunlight to pass through the lid and facilitate cooking. With its no-tip-over design, stability is not a problem at all regardless of the surface level.

Sun oven

As a solar appliance, it has a built-in thermostat and collapsible reflectors that is capable of generating as much as 360 – 400 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. Baking, steaming, and boiling are just some of its functionalities. The external features are presentable because it is covered with black enamel and weighs 21 pounds. Its foldable legs make it very handy and transferable.

Solar Grill

This is a build-your-own solar grill that uses an old satellite dish and scrap metals. It is a dual cooking device, which uses fuel and solar energy. It is capable of performing any cooking method such as baking, broiling, stewing, frying, and boiling. Since the power comes directly from the sun, it is considered environment-friendly due to absence of harmful chemicals in the air.

Advantages of a portable solar-powered camping stove

Portability

Most of the camping stoves are designed for easy transport; thus, portability is one of its characteristic features. In addition, it has collapsible legs that make it easier to carry and store.

Convenience

You won’t be having any problem with fuel shortage when using solar-powered stoves. Instead, you are even helping in the conservation of energy.

Economical

Since the sun’s energy is for free, absolutely there is no need to purchase fuel and wood to generate heat or electricity. All you need to do is to save energy by trapping the rays on a solar panel where it can be stored. This would mean a lot of savings on the part of the consumers.

Environment-friendly

Without the use of fuel, there are no apparent contaminants such as carbon monoxide can harm the air. No soot formation is also noted because of the absence of combustible chemical, which is fuel.

Safe

Using solar camping stoves, accidental spillage of fuel and danger of catching fire are less likely to happen because the only source of heat is the sunlight.

Buying Tips For Camping Stoves
camp stoves

Article by Nicole Munoz

The vast selection of camping stoves tagged with technical terms a layman wouldn’t understand, may be scary for some who are not that experienced when it comes to camping and buying camping stoves. However, purchasing the right camping stove is not as hard as it may seem.

Here are some considerations you should take into account when buying a camping stove. With these information and simple tips, selection and purchase would be much easier

Size

Camping brands like Coleman offer one, two and multiple burner camping stoves. What you should opt for should depend on the volume of cooking you intend to do. If you’re solo packing, a camping stove with one or two burner may do but if you intend to go camping with the whole family or plan to have a camping cook feast with a bunch of friends, go for a camping stove that has two or more burners to save time cooking.

Type of Fuel

After deciding which stove size is suitable for your camping needs, the next thing to consider is the type of fuel you’ll want to use. Your fuel options include propane, white gas (otherwise known as Coleman fuel), unleaded gas, butane or kerosene. However it is mostly recommended to use either propane or white gas only.

Out of all the camping stoves, those that are fuelled by white gas produce the most heat. It is the more environment-friendly choice for it burns cleanly without any odor or effect on food taste as well as produces less waste.

Many of the Coleman camping stoves that are fuelled with white gas operate on dual fuel system which means that the stove can run either on white gas or unleaded gasoline. However, it is best that you use only white gas unless during cases when you run out of it and can’t buy any.

Propane camp stoves on the other hand are simpler and more easy to use, but weigh a lot heavier compared with white gas. But propane Coleman camping stoves are also great choices because of their easiness to operate and ignite, and good performance in warm climates and at low elevations. Most Coleman camping stoves powered with propane fuel even have electronic ignitions to save time and energy.

Type of Camping Activity

Another consideration to make is the type of camping you intend to do during your trip. For example, if you plan to go backpacking, choose a camping stove that is lightweight, has a single burner for this is easier to carry in your load.

But if you intend to go on a family camping trip, a group hike or RV camping, it is more appropriate to opt for three or four burner stoves that would allow you to create a grand fiesta for everyone.

Now, if you’re planning to go on a beach camping trip or have a backyard party where you’ll probably want to do some grilling on the side, a combination of a stove and grill is the perfect choice for you.

Many camping brands such as Coleman provides you with a wide array of quality camp stoves and background information on its features to make your choice much easier.

camp stoves question by aneagleheart13: How do you light a coleman unleaded fuel camp stove?
I have a dual fuel (kenmore) coleman 2 burner camp stove & no lighting instructions! I get a big flame before the burner but nothing at the burner, how do you light one of these things without burning down the campsite ! HELP !

camp stoves best answer:

Answer by Bubba13
Make sure the connections are tight before you try to light this again. You may also want to check the area of the burner, spiders love the small area there. Pump up the tank , strike a match, lay it un the burner, turn on the burner knob. If this doesn’t work, then you may have a defective product.

Tips on Buying a Good Camping Stove
camp stove

Article by meliza mateo

In order to choose the best camping stove, it is advisable to take into consideration several important factors such as the size and weight of camping stove, the type of camping activity, the type of fuel, and the brand of the camping stove.

Camping stoves are essential during a camping trip. Therefore, it is helpful that you choose for the one that suits you best.

Size and weight

The size and weight of a camping stove can make or break a camping experience. If you’re camping by yourself, or there’s only two or three of you, then a huge camping stove is not a good idea. For a camping party of less than three people, choose one that’s compact and lightweight. This would mean that you would not be burdened with your camping stove whether you’re traveling to or from your campsite or having to deal with worrying about leaving some items behind because there’s no more room since you’ve got a huge camping stove with you.

Type of camping activity

If you’re camping with your friends, and if you are a rather large group, then it’s best to invest in a two-burner stove. These types of stoves allow you to cook two types of food at the same time, cutting the time needed to cook enough food for a large group. If you are on your way to a beach camping trip, then a combination of a stove and grill is your best option, especially if you’re planning to do some grilling.

Type of fuel

Fuel options for camping stoves are white gas, propane gas, unleaded gas, kerosene, or butane. However, most camping experts would recommend the use of either propane or white gas.

White gas (also known as Coleman fuel) produces most heat; it is also more environmentally friendly since it burns cleanly and does not have any odor nor does it affect food taste. Propane gas is more easy to use, but it can weigh heavier than white gas despite its simplicity. It is both easy to operate and to ignite. It has also proven of its good performance in warmer temperatures at lower elevations.

Brand

When searching for a camping stove, it is best to check the brands that are well-known for making quality products. This ensures good performance from your camping stove as opposed to the risk of buying lesser known and cheaper brands. Although branded camping stoves might be more expensive, some of them also give you a warranty. A camping stove is important, and choosing the wrong one could lead to disastrous events; a proven track record in quality and performance is important, so it’s best to do your research once you’ve narrowed down your choices based on the criteria given above.

Camp Stove or Firepit – Which is Better?
wood camping stoves

Article by Jamie Rona

When it comes to camping, the feasting possibilities are endless. But how do you know what to cook, when to cook it, and what to cook it on? If you know how to cook in the kitchen, you’ll be a wiz when it comes to cooking outdoors.

The only thing you really need to consider is what to cook the food on. Do you use a campfire or a portable camping stove? To answer this question, we need to look at the pros and cons of each method.

Let’s start with the fire pit. The fuel is easy enough to find, wood and kindling. That can easily be found on an afternoon hike. That or most campgrounds have wood you can buy. Along with being able to cook on it, the campfire gives you warmth on a cold night or a chilly morning. It emits light to navigate your way around your campsite, and it creates the perfect setting for telling ghost stories.

Two food pros for this method of cooking include the ability to cook with just aluminum foil or a stick, which means no dishes to wash, and the all-famous smores by the fireside.

As for the cons, a fire must always have someone to tend it. It can sometimes take a while to start and a while longer to be big enough to cook on. And before you can leave or go to sleep for the night, the fire must be completely extinguished. If not, even one hot coal could spark a wildfire.

The portable camp stove, which usually uses white gas or propane depending on the type, is more convenient in ways a fire is not. The set up process is fast and easy, as is the tear down. With a stove you have temperature control. And, one of the best features, you can use it under a tarp or dining fly if the weather is soggy.

Of course, every up has a down. You will have to make sure you have extra fuel on hand. There will be dishes to wash, and a gusty day makes it hard to maintain a flame, which greatly extends your cooking time.

So which method of camp side cooking should you choose? My family and I use both. That way you get the best of both worlds. We typically use the campfire at night for the fun of smores and storytelling and, of course, to see by. Then in the morning we use the camp stove so that we can get on with the day’s activities. As for you and your family, you’ll just have to find the fit that works best for you.

Outdoor Camping Stoves
wood camp stoves

Article by Jared Smilton

There are numerous choices when it comes to outdoor camping stoves. There are single burner stoves to a full stove-oven combo and many options in between. Most of the stoves are fuelled by propane with limited choices other than a few that are charcoal. When on a hunting or camping trip there will always be fresh hot food and no more cold cut sandwiches day after day. With the different sizes, there will be the right stove for a group or an individual’s needs.

For families or groups on a camping trip, there are camping stoves that are designed to hold several pots/pans at once. There are several makers of double burner outdoor camping stoves. These all work off of propane cylinders (either the large refillable type or small canisters). Most of these stoves close or fold up for easy stowing and portability. Some of them also have fold out legs for the ability to be used as a tabletop or a standalone unit. The units with a built-in matchless ignition start, gives campers added security and safety.

The stove-oven combo camping stoves offer a unique outdoor cooking experience. Most have two large burners and oven space large enough to hold a Dutch oven. The output will allow the camper to use both burners and the oven at the same time. They are powered by the disposable one pound canisters, but can use the larger (twenty pounds) refillable propane tanks as well. The oven part can get as hot as 400 degrees Fahrenheit and comes with a thermometer.

The charcoal outdoor camping stoves are an alternative to the propane powered camping stoves for those weary of using gas or just prefer charcoal (or wood). These stoves are all on the smaller side, but get the job done just as well as the gas versions. They have fold out or collapsible smoke stacks and are very easily transported, even if hiking is required to get to the campsite.
