When it comes to buying a camping stove there are different types on the market. These different types are suited to different uses so it is worth considering a few options when looking to buying a new camping stove.
One consideration is the environment in which you are going to be cooking. Are you going to be hiking or are you going camping with the car. This plays a part because if you are hiking you will need to carry your camping stove. Therefore a one burner stove suitable to cook yourself a nice meal or prepare a hot drink or some soup will be ideal. Single burner stoves are fairly lightweight and easily transportable. This makes them ideal to store in a rucksack. They are also quick to use and therefore when stopping for a break and a hot drink it is easy to get them fired up and in use. single burner stoves also come with a small canister of fuel so again this makes them easy to transport. The fuel can be replaced once it has run out at lots of locations especially most camp sites.
If you are camping with the car and maybe the family or friends then it is worth considering more of a camping cooker. These usually come with 2 burners and sometimes a grill. This makes preparing larger meals much easier. Cooking at camping doesn’t have to results in plain meals. With these two burner stoves you can provide large and tasty meals for the whole family or simply use them to boil kettles to make a well earned cuppa first thing in the morning. with the larger cookers you can also use larger pans and frying pans. As suggested these stoves are bigger and often come with a wind proof lid and sides and therefore they are not portable and once setup will stay with your tent. The larger camping stoves also come with a separate fuel supply which is attached via a rubber hose and regulator. This fuel is also readily available from most camping stores and campsites.
Other considerations as well as size are what fuel to use. The most popular fuel for both small stoves and large stoves are butane or propane or a mix of the two. The fuel normally comes in cartridges of varying sizes, some transportable for the smaller cooker and some larger for the non-transportable option. This type of fuel is predictable and stable and lights easily. It is also quite controllable to vary the amount of heat required.
Pressure stoves run on pressurised petroleum. They can get very hot but are very fuel efficient and also come in a variety of sizes bit aren’t as common as the propane / butane stoves.
You can also get meths burners. Meths is a liquid so does not need a pressurised container. It doesn’t give off as much heat as the previous options and also produces a colourless flame so care needs to be taken if lighting during the day.
There are some great camping stove accessories available as well, such as pots and pans and various kettles and also great accessories like toasters. For larger cookers you can get camping kitchens which offer shelter from the wind as well as shelving to store the camping stove and the pots and pans when not in use.
So whether you are hiking or setting up camp for the family holiday there are a great range of camping stoves out there as well as camping gas and fuel to get them going.

First thanks to those who answered my last question on tents and tent prices, you all really helped. Now my other question is about two burner camping stoves. I love to camp but am not a back packer, just a family camping guy. I have been using a Coleman match lite two burner propane stove for many years and before that was a Coleman two burner white gas stove that finally died a few years ago. Anyway I was thinking about replacing my stove as my son has been talking about taking the grand kids camping and will want to borrow my stove which means I’ll never get it back so I told him that he could have mine. So I guess my question is should I stick with the tried and true Coleman or is there another brand that is better? If so what brand and why is it better than a Coleman? I prefer propane stoves.

Interesting, I don’t remember writing that…mine is the exact situation except I didn’t actually tell my son he could have it permanently, he just assumed it! At any rate, we stuck with the tried and true Coleman with the sole exception of the fact that I also purchased on of the multiple manifold hoses so we could hook up a 20 pound tank up to it and the lantern!
